Before the Friday night lights, other athletes were at work in Chambers County. Four volleyball squads took the court on Thursday night. The biggest story of the night was undoubtedly Valley’s long-awaited win against Beulah.

Valley

The Rams are coming off of a losing season. While the JV squad fell to Beulah early in the night, Valley’s Varsity squad looked like a team reborn beating the Bobcats in four sets. Beulah hung in there each set but only captured the third one 26-24.

The first two sets came down to wire, with the Rams winning the first 25-22. Beulah would force two match points in the second for a final tally of 26-24, going Valley’s way. The third set ended with the same score, but this time Beulah hung on to force a fourth set Valley ended strongest, winning set four 25-17.

The Rams hope to continue the momentum of the game one win against Russell County at 5:30 ET on Aug. 27.

LaFayette

Under a new coach, the Bulldogs debuted against the Dadeville Tigers. The young team were shaking out the jitters as they fell to the Tigers in three straight sets, 25-7, 25-11, 25-6.

The team will have to bounce back as they face Notsulga at 5:00 CT on Aug. 26. It will be a tough week as they have two games on the following days, a rematch at Dadeville and at home against Booker T. Washington.

Chambers Academy

On the other side of LaFayette, the Rebels also lost in straight sets to Edgewood Academy, last year’s state champions. Despite the quality of their opponent, the Rebels kept it close going 15-25, 18-25, 20-25.

New head coach, Chuck Cooper said the Seniors stole the show, led by Sarah McClellan who had 8 digs and received the coach’s ball for her defensive efforts.

The JV squad faired better, and won both of their sets played, both times beating the Wilcat’s JV squad 25-12. A standout on the younger team was ninth-grader Samantha Lovelace who had seven kills and seven aces on the night.

The rebels will play at Abbeville Christian Academy on Aug. 29 at 5:00 CT. Both football and volleyball games are streamed on the school’s YouTube channel.

Springwood

Springwood’s program started its sophomore season with a tough loss against Trinity. The Wildcats have had to start from square one with a young program, players, and new coaches.
