The Valley boys basketball team starts the 2024-2025 season 0-3. On Tuesday, Troup County beat Valley 62-49 to hand them their third loss of the season, in what was a dominant showing for the Tigers.
After an extremely successful tenure under Deshawn Harper, who was in attendance on Tuesday night, new head coach Robert Cotton has taken the reins.
Valley would keep the game competitive early, but the swarming Troup attack was too much for the Rams to handle. Dee Moreland was everywhere on offense for the Tigers and Valley had no answers for him.
Both offenses got off to a sluggish start and subsequently, the game was tied at 11 points apiece heading to the second quarter. The Tigers were able to grab a smidgen of momentum heading into halftime by outscoring the Rams 12-8 in the second period.
Troup was aided by the Ram’s struggle at the free throw line. They missed eight of the 11 free throws in the second quarter. They went 13 for 33 on the night.
Erin Frazier would be the only Ram successful behind the arch, scoring two three-pointers in the first half. Valley would settle for two points for the rest of the game.
The third quarter would prove to be decisive as the Tigers outscored the Rams 23-13 in the period to capture a double-digit lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Valley huffed and puffed, but could never get back into the game in the fourth quarter. The final frame would be the Ram’s most productive, scoring 17 points.
Troup contained the Valley offense for the majority of the game as Galvin Goss was the only Ram to truly break down the Troup defense, finishing with 16 points, seven of those in the fourth.
Valley will be on the road Friday against Glenwood seeking their first win.
