The Chambers County School Board got through a lot of business during the February meeting on Wednesday night after the Black History Month recognition.
The board members approved Superintendent Dr. Sharon Weldon’s recommendation for financial information for the new consolidated high school. Weldon has been in conversations with the broker Joe Jolly & Co since stepping into the superintendent position.
Another item on the agenda was to approve the recommended salary for the superintendent. The board has discussed the item at past meetings and requested more information before passing a motion. The board members all approved the new salary, except for Jay Siggers who voted no.
On Wednesday night, the board also made a motion to close J.P. Powell and Inspire Virtual Academy as cost centers. As Weldon explained, this will not impact school operations or the students. It means that they will no longer be separate entities financially and will operate under the Eastside budget and each respective high school.
The board also approved a long list of surplus items from Inspire Academy, Huguley and Fairfax Elementary, Valley High, LaFayette High, WF Burns, JP. Powell, BH. Shawmut Elementary, the transportation department and the central office.
These items, mostly old computers, will be scrubbed and bought for scrap.
With the end of the school year approaching, the board also approved positions for summer programs like the elementary school reading and math camp and the special education summer program.
Board member Reco Newton asked the board and superintendent why they didn’t use assistant principals for the administration during the summer. K8 Director Sheila Jones said some of the elementary schools don’t have assistant principals.
