Collin Sharpe from Harmon Engineering gave an update on the fire hydrant project in the city of LaFayette during the city council meeting on Monday night.

So far, the group has installed 19 out of the 40 hydrants in the city.

On Monday night, the Harmon Engineering group proposed placing insertion valves in the critical areas where the crew can’t get the water to turn off for some of the hydrants.

“Basically just they bring this machine in there and put a new valve in the line while it’s still live, and then, you know, they’ll be operational valves, where the future going forward, we can turn the water off,” Sharpe said.

Sharpe said the city’s water department and the contractor on the project, Brandon Clifton, have done a good job working together to get all the water lines turned off.

Because of this change, the group presented a new invoice to the city council where they will be exchanging five of the valves they’ve already got for a different type of valve. The difference in price is about $370 for a $700 total.

Another add-on will be for two risers. Two hydrants, one by Jack’s restaurant on 9th Ave Southwest and one on MLK Road, are in good condition but are just buried depp underground. Instead of changing the hydrant, they plan to order custom risers to help pick the hydrant up further out of the ground.
