LANETT — Lanett Senior Center participants on Friday celebrated Valentine’s Day by having an open house in their recently upgraded computer lab and with the naming of Valentine’s Day kings and queens.

The computer lab doubles as something of a reading nook for the seniors. It’s chock full of all sorts of reading material and is equipped with some new computers. Some new lighting has been installed in the room inside the L.B. Sykes Community Center, and IT specialists have installed some needed WiFi connections.

“It’s a great place to catch up with what’s going on in the world,” said Senior Center Manager Sandra Thornton. “We want to thank State Representative Debbie Wood and State Senator Randy Price for helping us with the funding needed for the upgrades in our computer lab. We also want to thank Congressman Mike Rogers for getting a printer for us.”

Names were drawn for this year’s Valentine’s Day king and queen. Rev. Michael Stiggers and wife Cheryl Stiggers served as co-emcees for the program. They sang a duet in tribute to seniors everywhere. It was set to the tune of the 1970s hit “Sunny” by Bobby Hebb. The chorus went “Sunny you’re so true, we love you!”

The seniors had big smiles on their faces, clapped and sang along with the song.

Floyd Aikens’ name was drawn for the Valentine’s Day King. Staley Hill was first runner up and Gerald Brumbeloe second runner up. Neva Van Meter was the Valentine’s Day Queen. Dot Brumbeloe was first runner up and Joyce McLemore second runner up.

The seniors enjoyed the Valentine’s Day treats that were served. Lanett Police Chief Denise McCain came by to greet the seniors and had a special guest with her, a mascot known as The Heart of Kindness (a.k.a. School Resource Officer T.J. Wood). The giant walking heart with angel wings had been a big hit earlier in the day at W.O. Lance Elementary School.
