Following the announcement of Daniel Lundy’s, Assistant County Engineer, departure from the county at the beginning of the County Commission meeting on Monday, there were only a few other agenda items.
County Engineer Josh Harvill asked the commission to approve a request from the Springwood School National Honor Society. The organization has asked to “Adopt a Mile” of Country Club Road (CR 84) from Hillcrest Cemetery to Providence Baptist Church.
“This would be Springwood School’s second mile adopted as a part of the Country Club Road, and they would basically have both the first two miles from Lanett city limits and West…As areas where they will be trying to clean and make litter free,” Harvill said.
County Manager Regina Chambers presented a resolution asking the county to set the 2025-2026 levies for alcohol licensing. The levies would be the same as last year’s, with no changes, said Chambers. The commission approved the resolution unanimously.
The Commission also went into executive session to discuss pending litigation. Following the session, County Attorney Skip McCoy asked the commission to enter into two contracts. The first would be with Surefire Cyber for IT Services. The second would be with Polsinelli Law Fire for a “cyber security response.”
This motion comes after a cybersecurity breach on the part of either the county or contractor which led to the loss of $800,000 in public funds. VT-N reported previously that the County was seeking to recoup the losses through civil and criminal litigation.
Some other announcements made during the meeting:
- A joint effort by the city of Valley and the County will offer recycling services for appliances, machines, and “anything with an extension cord,” explained Sam Bradford. It will be held April 21 to 24 and Saturday, April 26. More information will be released on the County’s Facebook page in the coming weeks.
- The Highway Department is doing a patch job on County Road 278 likely running from Tuesday to Thursday. The road is one of the most heavily traveled in the county. Harvill asks citizens to heed signs and be patient.
- The next meeting of the commission will be on April 7. The courthouse will be closed April 21 in observance of Easter Monday.
