The LaFayette City Council made a motion to allow the Chambers County Development Authority to move forward with plans to sell the former McClendon building in downtown LaFayette.

The CCDA stopped marketing the building for sale after an individual in the city expressed interest in purchasing it from the city last year. Talks of the purchases have since come to an end, according to City Clerk Louis Davidson.

The 20,000-square-foot building is currently standing empty with no plans for use.

LaFayette’s mayor and council agreed to make a motion to allow the CCDA to put the building back on the market. They also discussed repainting the entryway of the building as photographers had asked to use the space for prom pictures.

LaFayette purchased the McClendon building, located on Alabama Avenue, in 2017. The building was planned as the new city hall, but after realizing the cost of the necessary repairs, the council voted to sell it instead.

The new city hall building is planned to be the former bank across the street from Renfroe’s on the other side of the county courthouse. The council is currently working on plans for renovating the building to make it ADA compliant.

Davidson said that they are currently waiting to hear back about the new estimates from the architect, as they have scaled down the renovations. From there, the city will put the project out for bids.
