On July 20th, 2024, at approximately 4:54 AM, Lee County inmate Shawn Dewon Callaway (39) from Auburn was found deceased inside of his cell at the Lee County Detention Center. Russell County Sheriff’s investigators responded to investigate the death. To ensure impartiality, it is standard  procedure for the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to request an independent agency conduct any in -custody death of a Lee County inmate. The inmate’s body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy which later revealed that he died from asphyxia due to neck compression. During the investigation, Russell County Investigators discovered evidence that indicated Callaway’s roommate, Jimmy Jenkins Jr. (26) from Tuskegee,  was involved in the death.

On February 27th 2025, a Lee County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Jenkins with Intentional Murder.

On March 10th, 2025, Russell County Sheriff’s Investigators served Jenkins with the murder indictment at the Lee County Jail and he is being held without bond.
