STORM SHELTER & SAFER PLACES INFORMATION FOR CHAMBERS COUNTY
Five Points:
Location of Shelter: located in the old civil defense shelter in the basement of the lunchroom at Five Points Elementary School. 10180 Co Rd 222, Five Points, AL 36855
Hours: The Town of Five Points will be opening a storm shelter beginning 3/14/2025 until after the predicted weather event is over.
Details:
1. Bring your own chair if you wish to sit. It is very spacious but limited seating
2. Pets are allowed but must be on a leash or in a crate. No Exceptions
3. This shelter is not wheelchair accessible.
4. There is a restroom available at the shelter.
5. Bring the personal belongings you want. A weather radio is all that will be onsite.
6. Bring your personal flashlight in case the power goes out
7. Parking in the school parking lot.
8. There is power ventilation in the shelter but no heat/cool control at the time.
9. Self-service in the area. It is basically a secure refuge underground that will save your life in a storm
10. The entrance has 12 steps to get you underground. Good footing but be prepared to go down steps.
11. Signage will direct you to the entrance.

Valley First Church of the Nazarene:
Location of Shelter: Valley First Church of the Nazarene, 103 Church Street, Valley AL
Hours: Opening if severe weather is announced (hours unknown)
Details:
1. FEMA-style Safer Shelter in our basement.
2. Both Spanish and English language support will be available at this location.
3. A Paramedic and FEMA/CERT instructor will be at this location.
4. Anyone is welcome who needs a safe place to shelter in place.
Valley Community Center:
Hours: Saturday, March 15 at 8 p.m. EST through 7 a.m. EST Sunday, March 16
Happy Valley Church:
Location of shelter: 1623 49th Ave SW, Lanett, AL 36863
Hours: Open Now
Details: Go to church gym
Powell Chapel UMC-LaFayette:
Location of shelter: 100 Third St NE Lafayette, AL 36862
Hours: Open Now
Details:
1. Feel free to bring snacks.
2. Unfortunately NO PETS ALLOWED
3. Bring a personal flashlight in case the power goes out.
4. There is a weather radio on site to keep current on weather conditions/alerts.
5. This shelter is wheelchair accessible.
6. Bring any personal belongings you need.
7. NO SMOKING inside
8. Location is self-service
The Abanda Community Shelter:
Location of Shelter: 1077 County Rd 139 Wadley, AL
Hours: Currently open
Details: A FEMA-designated shelter
The Waverly Community Shelter:
Hours: Currently open
Details: A FEMA-designated shelter

Southern Union’s Opelika campus:
Hours: They open AFTER a WATCH has been issued

Davidson Baptist Church:
Location of shelter: 2921 Highway 18, West Point, GA.
Hours: Open now until the storms are over
IF YOU LIVE IN A MOBILE HOME – Utilize one of the shelters listed above or check with your local or neighboring church, neighbors, or relatives and see if you can stay there until the storm is over as your safer place, or business open 24/7 that can serve as a shelter. Always choose locations within a home that are away from doors and windows and are not an outside wall – like interior closets, bathtubs, bathrooms, basements, etc.
People can also go to the American Red Cross website or download their app regarding the opening/closing of other storm shelters in their area if they are traveling or are not in their hometown and are unfamiliar, or to locate a loved one after a disaster who may be residing in one of their shelters
