LANETT — The Lanett Police Department and the Chattahoochee Fuller Center Project (CFCP) teamed up on Saturday to have a huge Easter egg hunt across from the Berean Church in the West Shawmut neighborhood. Dozens and dozens of children were present, and it didn’t take them long to scoop up an estimated 1,500 plastic eggs filled with candy from a grassy area underneath cool shade trees.
CFCP Executive Director Robin Pierre brought 100 Easter baskets to give away to local children. She also had a contest where people could guess at the number of jelly beans in a big jar. The person coming closest to the actual number was the winner. “I know what that number is because I personally counted them,” she told The Valley Times-News.
Pastor Vernon Carter and members of the Berean Church helped with many activities that were taking place. Tents were set up on the site, and lots of food was available. A number of West Shawmut churches joined in to help man them. One booth had popcorn, another one cotton candy, another had face painting, and Lanett police officers were grilling hot dogs underneath another tent.
Chief Denise McCain was all in for the Easter season. She wore a pink and white bunny suit with big floppy ears and huge rabbit-like feet. Her husband was in the full Easter bunny suit. Lisa Cofield was dressed as a yellow chick.
Mayor Jamie Heard was there in a t-shirt, making it clear he’s running for re-election. Council Member Ronnie Tucker was there as well.
LPD Detective Greg Reagan kept everything hopping by being the deejay for the day. He likes to do that when he’s not on duty.
“I was so pleased with the turnout,” Mayor Heard said. “We couldn’t have asked for better weather. Everyone was in a good mood today, and it was good to see that. I want to thank the police department, the Fuller Center and the Berean Church for what they did in getting this event together.”
