Another round of surveying has begun for the SS4A Chambers County, a comprehensive Safety Action Plan. The SS4A (Safe Streets and Roads for All) has been an ongoing project for the Chambers County Commission and county highway department since April 2024.
Chambers County was awarded the opportunity “to develop a Safety Action Plan for county-maintained roadways within its jurisdiction,” according to the survey.
Using the plan, the county employees will work on strategies and projects to help decrease the number of serious injuries and fatalities that occur on roadways. To help develop this plan, the Chambers County Commission and Development Authority are asking county residents for input prioritizing those safety strategies and projects.
Speeding, distracted or drunk driving, aggressive driving and seatbelt use are some of the safety concerns that the plan will aim to address.
Residents will be able to point out county roads with issues using a map as well as identify the main roadway concerns such as construction zones, heavy trucks and pavement conditions.
The SS4A project is funded by a U.S. Department of Transportation grant. The SS4A was awarded to 235 communities totaling $82 million.
Chambers County applied for a joint grant from the SS4A program, alongside Autauga, Elmore and Perry counties, with the Chambers County Commission acting as the lead applicant. The joint grant awarded the counties a total $640,000.
A requirement of the grant dictates that the plans must commit to reducing road injuries or deaths within a timeframe and a committee must be formed to create the plan. The SS4A Chambers County includes county officials from Autauga, Elmore and Perry counties as well.
The VT-N previously reported that the Chambers County Commission’s resolution of April 2024 anticipated the plan to cost $200,000 per county. At that time, the commission agreed to at least a 20 percent match of the grant funding. This means the county will pay $40,000 and receive $ 200,000 along with the other counties of the joint grant.
