With technology constantly outstripping itself in convenience and advancement, e-waste is a growing concern globally. In Chambers County, a free electronics recycling program from April 14 to 17 will be available for the community.
The program is an opportunity for citizens to properly dispose of any unwanted or unneeded electronics.
For the next week, residents can drop off anything from VCRs, cell phones and radios to computers, televisions and appliances.
According to UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Research), “less than one quarter (22.3%) of the year’s e-waste mass was documented as having been properly collected and recycled in 2022, leaving US $62 billion worth of recoverable natural resources unaccounted for and increasing pollution risks to communities worldwide.”
Whereas in the United States, according to ALIANZ Recycling, between 300 million and 400 million electronic items are dumped per year. Less than 20% of that is recycled. “E-waste represents 2% of America’s trash in landfills, but it equals 70% of overall toxic waste,” reports ALIANZ Recycling.
The drop-off location will be at the Chambers County Highway Department 18107 US Hwy 431 North in LaFayette. For more information, call 334-864-4377.
