WEST POINT — Thursday was Point University’s annual Impact Day. Hosted by the school’s Student Life Council, Impact Day is a day of service to the local community where students, faculty and staff work together to help clean, paint and organize local homes, churches and senior centers. The primary goal of Impact Day is to provide service and make a positive impact on the local community, fostering a spirit of Christ-centered service.
In West Point, the Point teams took care of such needed projects is cleaning along the trials in the city’s river park. picking up litter along selected city streets and taking care of some projects at the Chattahoochee Early Leaning Academy (CELA). In Lanett, some eager and energetic teams of Skyhawks were at the Lanett Senior Center, at the Mount Hermon Life Center, Goodsell Methodist and Greenwood Baptist Church. In Valley they were at Valley Baptist Church and the New Horizon Ministry.
“It is so good to have these students, faculty and staff with us today,” said Lanett Senior Center Manager Sandra Thornton. “The students along with Point’s Chief Enrollment Officer Rusty Hassell and Chief Academic Officer Jon Ernstberger went right to work and were a great help. They washed the senior buses, help prepare food in the kitchen, helped seniors better understand their phones and the computers here at the center and weeded out the raised bed gardens we have out back. The seniors love to grow tomato and pepper plants out there during the growing season.”
At nearby Goodsell Methodist Church, the Point students, faculty and staff took care of some yard work on the church grounds and helped in a current project to convert the former Thimble 2 alternations shop to a new purpose.
“Eman Cohen led the charge for us this year,” said Hassell. “She worked with community leaders and city officials in organizing and planning the day for us. Everyone at Point University looks forward to Impact Day every year. Classes are closed for the day and everyone gets out in the local community and to help out in any way we can. We love being involved in such projects as the Blocks of Blessings cleanups for the Fuller Center.”
The mission of Point University is to educate students for Christ-centered service and leadership throughout the world, focusing on spiritual growth and equipping students to integrate their faith with their careers.
