May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, providing a significant opportunity to enhance our understanding of behavioral health conditions and to reduce the stigma associated with mental health.

This month serves as a critical reminder of the extensive impact that mental illness and addiction can have on individuals, families, healthcare providers, and the broader community.

On May 3, the Lambda Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., successfully held its Third Annual Mental Health Awareness Walk at the Bowen East District Center in Lanett, Alabama. This event was an expression of solidarity with those facing mental health challenges.

In a press release, AKA said that, “while the march was planned initially along Highway 29, the Sisters demonstrated commendable flexibility in adapting to inclement weather conditions and shifted the event to the Bowen East District Center (1319 Magnolia Rd, Lanett, Alabama).

The walk commenced with an opening ceremony that featured thoughtful remarks from LZO President Mrs. Kimberly Marshall, Mayor Jamie Heard of Lanett, and Lieutenant Sandra Crim of the City of Valley.”

Crim, who has been involved with this initiative since its inception in 2023, shared her insights on the importance of mental health advocacy.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony highlighted the event’s significance, and participants engaged in various activities throughout the auditorium, hallways, and outdoors, reflecting their steadfast commitment to community service.

Looking ahead, the Sisters have carefully planned several events throughout May to promote mental health awareness further. A public Mental Health Awareness Symposium is scheduled for May 17, 2025, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, located at 2400 Old West Point Road, West Point, Georgia. They warmly invite community members interested in participating to contact Norma Williams or Angela Barber-Burton at mnbaptistc@gmail.com for opportunities related to Narcan training and discussions addressing mental health issues that affect our communities.

The Betty/LaGayle Chemo and Scholarship Gala will take place on May 31, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Valley Community Center. This event aims to support individuals undergoing chemotherapy and offer scholarships to aspiring seniors who exemplify leadership qualities. For further information, please contact Ms. Uconda McCants at ucondamccants@gmail.com or any Lambda Zeta Omega Chapter member.

“Together, we can work to foster a more compassionate and supportive environment for mental health awareness and community empowerment,” read the statement.
