The Chambers County School Board celebrated its retiring teachers and staff during Wednesday night’s meeting. The meeting was held at Langdale Auditorium in Valley to say thank you to the outgoing educators and staff members.
Before giving the honorees a plaque, Dr. Sharon Weldon, the CCSD Superintendent, said that the retirees had a combined 321 years of service to the school district. The department heads lined up in the auditorium to give the teachers and staff members their flowers and wish them well in retirement.
One of the honorees, Stephan Sexton, a bus driver for the school district, asked to share a story that encapsulates a career serving in education.
His students on the bus knew him as Pastor Steve, his other profession. One of the young elementary schoolers had always called him ‘his pastor’. Tragically, the child died suddenly. The student’s family asked Sexton to perform the funeral because he is, after all, ‘his pastor’.
After the ceremony was over, Weldon and the board thanked the retirees for their years of service.
