Whether she’s in the classroom, on the field, or in the woods, Chambers Academy’s new valedictorian, Harrisyn Reames, is always staying busy.
Reames came to Chambers Academy from Valley High School near the end of her ninth-grade year.
“I’ve enjoyed it,” Reames said. “It was a change coming into a smaller environment from a public school. But I really met some really good people and made some good relationships with the faculty and the students and everything.”
Reames said her favorite subjects in school are English and History. She said she enjoys writing essays and getting to flex her creative muscles. One teacher that stands out, though, is Coach Tom Garrett, who she said has inspired her and made a great impact on her.
“He is our history teacher and you can ask him anything about a historical event and he can tell you about it,” she said.
Outside of the classroom, Reames is constantly staying active. Throughout middle and high school, she has enjoyed being on the cheer team. She also enjoys going hunting with her father and playing tennis.
Reames also volunteers her time at church and in her youth group.
As if all of that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Reames serves on the math team and the Beta Club. She is also a Chambers Academy ambassador and the Vice President of SGA.
With so much on her plate, it would be easy to get overwhelmed but Reames said she has learned how to balance all of her responsibilities.
“I’ve also taken dual enrollment classes, so I’ve had to work on those along with my classes at school,” Reames said.
Reames said her parents have always supported and encouraged her and created a strong support system. At school, all of her teachers at Chambers Academy have supported her through her education.
“They’ve always been very supportive and always willing to help me with any of my assignments or anything like that,” she said.
As she neared the end of high school, Reames said she worked hard to keep her grades up so she could maintain her position at the top of the class. When the day finally came and it was announced, she felt proud that years of hard work had paid off.
“I was really proud of myself,” Reames recalled. “And when you work hard for something, it’s just so rewarding to be able to get recognition for what you’ve worked for.”
After graduation, Reames looks forward to joining Southern Union’s Radiology program in Opelika.
As she gets ready to say goodbye to her alma mater, Reames has some advice for upcoming students:
“If you want to achieve any goal you have, don’t let obstacles discourage you, work hard, and surround yourself with people who love and support you.”
