VALLEY — At its Monday meeting, the Valley City Council had the first reading of an ordinance to convey property to the Chambers County Board of Education. It’s an extension of a previous conveyance that was approved two years ago and involves a 73-acre site in Valley Industrial Park that is the planned site for the new consolidated high school.
The ordinance was approved in 2023 to cover a two-year period. The new ordinance extends it for a couple of more years and indicates the city council’s continuing support to have the new Chambers County High School constructed in Valley.
According to Mayor Leonard Riley, the council’s action makes it clear to the federal judge overseeing the case that city leaders remain behind building a new school on the approved site.
In other action at the brief session, a two-item consent agenda was approved. One of the items confirms the cost of an abatement on 16th Avenue.
This will allow the city to place a lien on the property to recover the cost of having done this. The second item permits the consumption of alcohol at a graduation party at the city-owned Lakeview Cabin.
A public hearing has been set prior to the Monday, June 9, 6 p.m. council meeting to confirm the cost of an abatement on Bennett Street.
City hall will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 26.
