Springwood School said goodbye to the class of 2025 on Monday night. The graduating seniors of the Lanett school celebrated their commencement ceremony in the school’s gym.

The wildcats sat on the floor of the gymnasium in the front row; behind them was reserved seating for family and friends.

“I want you to know that your class has done a tremendous job of leading the school well and leaving a strong legacy and example of service for future senior classes,” said Kim Plank, Head of School.

Plank said that one-third of the seniors served as teaching assistants. The class also implemented senior lunch, where the upperclassmen eat with the elementary students.

“You really reflect all the best qualities of what it means to be a Wildcat,” Plank said.

The class salutatorian, Emily Jo Matthews, was one of the few students who had gone to Springwood for her entire schooling. Her speech focused on the role of the institution as a home.

“As we go, let’s not just leave behind this school. Let’s carry it forward. Let’s bring the lessons we’ve learned, the people we’ve met, the love we’ve received and the faith we’ve grown,” Matthews said. “May we go on to impact others through our ability to make them feel like family. We’ll find new communities, we’ll build new homes, and most importantly, we’ll become a part of someone else’s sense of home.”

Brennan Plank, the school’s valedictorian, took a survey of his class to see what challenges the group has had to overcome at Springwood. He spoke on how the obstacles they have faced were easier within the Springwood community.

“It’s a powerful gift to bring someone out of the valley, but it is equally powerful to be brought out of the valley,” Plank said. “To our teachers and faculty: you have been on your campus, you’ve helped us patch our tires, even at times we didn’t want to admit they were flat. We may not always remember the formulas or the facts you taught us, but we will always remember how you cared.”

One member of the graduating class was unable to attend the graduation. Marcelo Pattaro Silva, an international student from Brazil, was recently diagnosed with cancer. He was back in Brazil receiving treatment at the time of the ceremony.

“Throughout this incredibly challenging time, Marcelo has faced his illness with remarkable courage. This diploma represents not only Marcelo’s academic accomplishments, but also the strength of his character,” said John Lanier, who presented the diplomas.

Ann Hixon, head of the International program, accepted Silva’s diploma on his behalf.

After the speeches were made and the procession done, the seniors circled up to throw their caps in the air and officially become Springwood alumni.
