City of Lanett prepares for August election

LANETT – At the Monday meeting of the Lanett City Council, Mayor Jamie Heard gave formal notice of a municipal election to be taking place on Tuesday, August 26. Offices on the ballot include mayor, five seats on the city council and five seats on the city school board.
Voting will be taking place in the L.B. Sykes Community Center, located at 1302 North Cherry Drive. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. If a runoff election is necessary, it will take place on Tuesday, September 23.
Anyone who lives in the city of Lanett and has lived there for at least 90 days before election day may run for office. They can do so by filing appropriate forms with City Clerk Deborah Gilbert and paying the qualifying fee of $50.
Qualifying begins at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, and ends on Tuesday, June 24.
To vote in the election, an individual must be a registered voter who has lived in their district at least 30 days before the election.
Public notices of the election have been posted at city hall, the L.B. Sykes Community Center, the Lanett Post Office and Walton’s Grocery.
The current incumbents include Mayor Jamie Heard and Council Members Tony Malone, District One; Tamalita Autry, District Two; Ronnie Tucker, District Three; Angelia Thomas, District Four and Tifton Dobbs District Five.
School board members include School Board President Gwen Harris Brooks, District One; Myron Fears, District Two; Johnny Wood, District Three; David Gagnon, District Four and Gail Holley, District Five.
The superintendent, Jennifer Boyd, is an appointed position.
