Qualifying ended Tuesday evening for eligible residents who live in Alabama cities to seek office in the August 26 municipal elections.
A massive total of 34 people are running for office in Lanett this year. Every seat on the city council and the city school board is being contested.
In Valley, four incumbent council members qualified for new terms without opposition. Jim Jones has no opposition in District 2, Randall Maddux has none in District 3, Kendall Andrews is unopposed in District 5 and Jimmy Gilson has no opposition in District 7.
The city offices in Valley that are being contested are for mayor, where incumbent Leonard Riley faces a challenge from Allison Banks. In District 1, incumbent Jim Clark may face opposition from Bo Colley. Colley’s candidacy is pending. He qualified on Tuesday but still needs to pass an ethics report. This is routine for anyone who qualifies to run, and the candidate has five days to turn in such a report.
Three candidates will be on the ballot in both Districts 4 and 6. Incumbent Marquetta Madden is seeking another term in District 4. Madden is being opposed by Desmond Reece and Jeffery L. Finch who is a former member of the Chambers County Board of Education. In District 6, incumbent Henry Cooper is being challenged by L C Marshall and Jolanda Barnes.
This year’s Lanett city election will be as wide open as it has ever been. A total of 34 candidates are running for 11 available positions, including the offices of mayor, council members and school board members in five districts.
Eight candidates have qualified to run for mayor. They include the incumbent, Jamie Heard; two current members of the city council, Tony Malone and Tifton Dobbs, and a former member of the council, Stanley Roberts. Others running for mayor are Charles Autry, Rodney Ross and Erick Woody.
Two candidates are running for the District 1 seat being vacated by Malone. They are Roderick Autry and Denise Zachery. Three candidates are campaigning for the seat being vacated by Dobbs. They are Tony Moffett, Kim Roberts and Emily Shepard.
District 2 is also an open race. Incumbent Tamalita Autry is not seeking another term. Three candidates have jumped in the race for that seat. They are Sherry Potts, Kristina Story and Teresa Booker-Woody.
District 3 incumbent Ronnie Tucker is seeking a new term. Tucker is being opposed by Brad Lynn and Jarquez McCullough.
District 4 incumbent Angelia Thomas is also seeking another term. Thomas has drawn opposition from Charles Bagley and Kenneth Smith.
All five incumbents have qualified for new terms on the city school board. They are Board President Gwen Harris Brooks in District 1, Myron Fears in District 2, Johnny Wood in District 3, David Gagnon in District 4 and Gail Holley in District 5.
Brooks will have opposition from Terry Reed in District 1, Fears from Shamia Lancaster-Morgan in District 2, Wood from Leilani Rudd, Michelle Tucker and Patricia Woody in District 3, Gagnon from Ashley Holloway in District 4 and Holley from Ryan Seymour in District 5.
