Barbon earns first-ever ITA  ranking in Point tennis history

WEST POINT, Ga. — Sophomore Federico Barbon (Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina) has become the first Point University tennis player to receive regional and national rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).  Barbon currently ranks 13th in the Oracle/ITA NAIA South Region and 35th in the Oracle/ITA NAIA National rankings.

Point head coach Chad Simpson (Fourth season) commented, “We have the toughest region in the country as all 20 regionally ranked players made the nation’s top 50, which means that our players see many of the nation’s best players in fall tournaments, conference matches, and regional duals.  Federico is a gamer, and I loved watching him rise to the occasion this fall.  Most importantly, he is a high-character guy who is loved by his teammates and maintains respect for his opponents.  There will be more of this from Federico and his teammates in the spring.”

Barbon has faced two NAIA regionally-ranked opponents this season – he lost a three-set match to 18th-ranked Nishanth Rebello from Middle Georgia State and also lost to sixth-ranked Mika Kosonen from Georgia Gwinnett College, 6-1, 6-0.  Kosonen is 11th in the ITA NAIA National rankings.

Alexis Schock named to Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete List

WEST POINT, Ga. — Point University forward Alexis Schock (Brandon, FL) has been named to the 2017 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete women’s soccer team by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).  A total of 614 women’s soccer players earned selection to the list.

In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or Sports Information Director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved an academic standing of junior or higher.

Schock has received Appalachian Athletics Conference All-Academic team honors for the last two seasons.  She scored one goal and one assist with 18 shots and eight shots on goal in 15 matches during the 2017 season.

Four Skyhawks Men’s soccer players on Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete List

WEST POINT, Ga. — Four Point University men’s soccer players have earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete recognition for the 2017 season.  Junior goalkeeper Ned Avies (Rochester, NY); junior midfielder Gary Shorrow (Toe Town, Liberia); junior forward Amadeu Guimaraes (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil); and senior midfielder Jaylen Hill (Memphis, TN) are listed among 492 players named to the 2017 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete team by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

All four Skyhawks earned Appalachian Athletics Conference All-Academic team honors for 2017, and Avies, Hill and Shorrow also received AAC All-Academic honors for 2016.  Avies played in goal in 11 matches and started nine in 2017, and posted a 2.90 goals-against average with 35 saves and two shutouts.  Shorrow started in 15 matches and played in 17 and scored one assist, and Guimaraes played in 19 matches, starting twice, and scored six goals and one assist with 15 shots and 11 shots on goal as a highly-valued reserve. Hill appeared in six matches.
