GREATER VALLEY AREA — The Alabama Sports Writers Association released its new state high school basketball rankings on Wednesday night.

The Lanett and LaFayette boys rose again in Class 2A.

The Panthers (13-5) leaped from fourth to third, while the Bulldogs (15-7) leaped from seventh to sixth. The teams met on Saturday, and Lanett emerged with a commanding victory, 77-55.

The Panthers have since secured triumphs over Reeltown, 75-39, and Horseshoe Bend, 114-52, to extend their win streak to six games. Only Section (16-5) and Vincent (17-5) are ranked ahead of Lanett in the poll.

After dropping the game to Lanett, LaFayette lost again on Monday at Russell County, 75-50. But the Bulldogs rebounded on Tuesday by defeating Horseshoe Bend, 46-34.

The Springwood School girls were the only other local team to make the rankings. The Lady Wildcats (14-6) were slotted eighth in the AISA. Last week, they were fifth. Consecutive losses to third-ranked Lee Scott Academy, 42-25, and second-ranked Glenwood School, 43-24, led to their drop in the poll.

The Lanett and LaFayette girls also earned recognition in the 2A rankings, though they remained on the fringe for a second-straight week. The Lady Panthers (10-4) and Lady Bulldogs (11-10) both received nominating votes.

In the past week, Lanett beat LaFayette, 46-38, Reeltown, 47-31, and Horseshoe Bend, 61-23.

LaFayette fell to Russell County in overtime, 73-69, on Monday after its Saturday loss at Lanett. The Lady Bulldogs got back on track Tuesday with a 67-13 win over Horseshoe Bend.

The Valley boys (10-9) also received nominating votes in 5A. They beat Beauregard on Monday, 59-53, but had their Tuesday game at Russell County canceled.
