VALLEY — Started in 1950s, Hood’s Pharmacy & Gifts has remained a family business for 68 years and will likely remain so far into the future.
It is currently owned and operated by John Hood II, son of the original owner John Hood Sr., who said business has been good and the future looks bright.
One of the reasons the store has done so well over the years is that the Hood’s have constantly been adding new items for purchase.
“We added the bookstore about 25 years ago,” Hood said. “The gift boutique was added in the last two years.”
Hood added that it all has been good for business.
“You’ve got to diversify,” he said. “On their own, these things [the bookstore, gift boutique, etc.] would have folded. We do more than sell basic medical supplies.”
Everyone at the store is also very excited to show off the Simply Southern items for sale and the various other new item offered.
“You can check us out on Facebook [www.facebook.com/Hoods-Pharmacy-680089722049118], Instagram [www.instagram.com/hoodspharmacyandgifts] or at our website [www.hoodspharmacyandgifts.com],” Traci Hood, John’s wife who is also an employee, said.
The pharmacy is unique in that the Hood family has owned and operated during its entire operation and will likely continue to do so in the future with Hood’s daughter, Kirsten, who has a doctor of pharmacy degree.
“She enjoys it,” Hood said. “She went to school to do this but it’s not something she thought up overnight.”
Hood also works with his wife, Traci, and his daughter Janna is currently attending nursing school at the University of Alabama.
