Mayor Kyle McCoy told The Valley Times-News Tuesday evening that the action was taken around 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
“The council will review the matter at the next council session on Monday May 7,” McCoy said. “In the interim, Major Johnny Wood will serve as the interim chief.”
Major Wood is second in command in a police department that has a total of 27 officers. Spates has been chief since 2011.
