› Friday, August 17th will be Free Watermelon Day at Valley Farmers’ Market. The Farmers’ Market is located under the pavilion in front of Langdale Mill. It’s open from 3 to 6 p.m. EDT every Friday afternoon through the growing season. There will be up to ten Alabama farmers there this Friday with such items as peaches, tomatoes, collards, squash, zucchini, red potatoes, watermelons, cantaloupes, rattlesnake beans and baked bread.
› ATTENTION: If you are age 16-24 and need help finding a job and planning your future, we are eager to help! Come to the YES! (Young adult Employment Skills) project orientation at the Circle of Care Center for Families located at 2200 35th Place, Valley. It will be taking place on Tuesday, August 14th at 9 a.m. EDT or 3 p.m. to find out more about how our program can meet your needs. The YES! project can assist 16-24 year-old young adults to attain their academic goals, provide job skills and life skills training and pay incentives for earned achievements. Eligible participants must be 16-24, not attending high school (withdrawn) without a diploma, or a low income high school graduate with a qualifying barrier.
› A reunion for the Lanett High School class of 1966 will be held with two events on Saturday, August 11, 2018. The first event will be a Meet and Greet at Lanett High School library from 2:00-4:00. This event will give classmates a chance to chat and take a stroll down memory lane by taking a tour of the school. The second event will be a dinner at Sonny’s Buffet Restaurant in Valley. Please contact Sheila Vickers Mason at 770.914.2150 for any questions concerning the reunion. If you have not confirmed you will be attending, contact Sheila so that there can be an accurate count in order to provide for the ones attending either event or both.
› Diversicare is looking for volunteers to assist with small and large group activities, Monday through Friday and some weekends. For more information contact Melinda Joseph at 334-644-1111.
› The Chambers County Farmers Federation will hold its annual meeting on Aug. 20 at noon CDT at the Farmers Federation Building in LaFayette. There will be a business meeting followed by a cookout. There is no charge and there will be door prizes. Alfa members are encouraged to attend.
› The Kiwanis Club of West Point meets regularly the second Monday of each month at noon at Momma Goldberg’s and the fourth Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Momma Goldberg’s in historic downtown West Point. Join us and see what Kiwanis is planning in West Point and Lanett. Newcomers are welcome!
› The Chambers County Commission’s Rules, Ways and Means Committee will have a budget meeting at 2:30 p.m. CDT (3:30 Eastern) on Monday, August 27, 2018 in the commission office in the courthouse in LaFayette. The full commission will meet at 4 p.m. CDT (5 EDT) on the same day. The Lanett City Council will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20. The Valley City Council will meet at 6 p.m. ET on Monday, Aug. 27.
› A monthly dementia support group meets at 6:30 p.m. EDT on the first Tuesday of the month at the Chattahoochee Hospice office, located at 6 Medical Park N0rth in Valley. A monthly grief support group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday at the Hospice office. For more information, call (334) 756-8043.
› The Interfaith Food Closet helps families with emergency food. Located on 20th Avenue behind the Langdale United Methodist Church, it’s open each week day, Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9-11:30 a.m. EDT; Tuesday and Thursday 1-4 p.m. and Wednesday 5:30-6:30 p.m. Each person must have proof of residence and a photo ID. If you would like to contribute to this very important ministry that serves around 100 families per month. please send your contribution to Interfaith Food Closet, P.O. Box 541 Lanett, AL 36863.
› The West Point Active Life Center is a recreation center for independent adults who are at least 55 years of age. Lunch is provided five days a week for those who are 60 and older. There’s also activities, games, billiards, quilting, exercise classes, trips and every Wednesday, FREE BINGO at 10:30 a.m. EDT. The Active Life Center serves West Point and the surrounding area.
› The Christian Service Center is open from 8 a.m. till noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. It’s open on Tuesdays by appointment and from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. To apply for assistance, you will need to bring your current electric bill and a photo ID. The Center is currently accepting donations of children’s clothing that’s in good condition.
