Three Greater Valley Area teams appear in latest football state rankings

There are three teams from the Greater Valley Area that are still in the Alabama Sports Writers Association high school football rankings this week.

The Panthers of Lanett High School still lead the way for the area, coming in at No. 2 for Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) 1A after a week one loss to Valley High School. Last season, Lanett went 15-0 and won the 2A state championship. The team has returned multiple All-State players, including seniors D’Terrion Glaze, Trikweze Bridges and junior Kristian Story. Bridges, a four-star University of Oregon commit, grabbed his first pick-six of the season last Friday against Valley. This Friday, the Panthers visit another locally-ranked team.

The LaFayette Bulldogs remain the No. 5 team in the 2A rankings after losing in a preseason game against Handley last Friday night. The Bulldogs are returning a pair of All-State players in seniors JaQuavian “Quabo” Boston-Gaines and Lajareon “Doug” Bryant. The Bulldogs went 9-3 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs last season. The Bulldogs host the Panthers this Friday in a rivalry matchup at Bulldog Stadium. Lanett won the matchup last year 42-16.

Chambers Academy moved up from being ranked as the No. 8 team to No. 7 in the latest Alabama Independent Schools Association (AISA) rankings after winning the first two games of the season by a total of 95 points. The Rebels are prepared to face Abbeville Christian Academy this Friday night. Abbeville is currently 1-1 on the season, winning last week 7-6 against Northside Methodist Academy.
