ALEXANDER CITY — The Valley ninth-grade football team (2-2-1) defeated Benjamin Russell 13-0 on Monday night. The game was stopped after the first quarter due to storms.
The first touchdown of the night came on the Rams’ fourth offensive play.
In a trick play, John White threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Kalan Sherrell. Bentley Green kicked in the extra point to put Valley up 7-0.
On the next defensive possession, Lamanta Gilbert forced a fumble and Cross Colley returned the turnover for a 23-yard touchdown.
Monday marked the second consecutive shutout of the Benjamin Russell ninth-grade football team this season by the Rams.
On Sept. 4, Valley’s freshmen tied with Benjamin Russell 0-0 in a game that was called off one minute into the fourth quarter due to thunderstorms that night. Benjamin Russell’s offense accumulated -50 total yards against the Rams in the previous matchup.
On Tuesday night, Colley also had four tackles in addition to his defensive score. T.J. Bennett has four tackles as well. Gilbert had two tackles and one for a loss, Jacquez Banks and Hunter Burdette also had two tackles. Dylan Earle and Bentley Green added a tackle each in Tuesday’s quarter.
On the offensive side of the ball, Tykale Foreman had one carry for two yards. M.J. Atkinson went 1-for-2 passing, with a completion to White for four yards.
The Rams freshmen will get a breather with a bye next week before heading into a tough portion of the schedule.
Valley will face Beauregard, Opelika and Central in the coming weeks, which should be a good measuring stick for the team, head coach Thomas Hill said.
