WEST POINT — From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, representatives of the Troup County Salvation Army were at the Virginia Cook Activity Center taking applications from West Point residents who are seeking assistance for Christmas gifts for children this year. Assistance was limited to the first 800 children who were signed up.

Lisa Martin, director of the Troup County Salvation Army, said that she’s pleased to have gotten a positive response from the community in their goal of helping needy families heading toward the Christmas season.

“We have gotten good support for our angel program,” she said. “As parents come in to register for toys, they fill out an angel card. They can check off what their children would like. Local businesses, civic clubs, churches and individuals can sponsor them. People have been very generous in supporting this thus far. The Walmart Distribution Center in LaGrange had asked for 100 angels.”

Another charity event for the Salvation Army will be taking place at Belk’s in LaGrange on Saturday, November 3rd. With the purchase of a $5 ticket, shoppers can purchase designer items at greatly reduced prices. Proceeds from the event will be going to the Salvation Army and other local charities. Tickets are on sale now. For information, contact TCSA Board Chair Sandra Thornton or Board Member Kristen Lester.

“This is a sister event,” Thornton said of the promotion. “It will be a great day to get all your sisters together and go shopping. You can all have a wonderful day and maybe even get a pedicure.”

Mayor Steve Tramell said that he was well pleased that a number of West Point residents had taken the initiative to get involved in an effort that will help families throughout Troup County.

The Salvation Army  Christmas gift program serves children who are 12 years of age or younger. Those who are older but with a documented mindset of children that age are eligible too. Those requesting assistance from this program must not have signed up with another agency.

Those who sign up must have a photo ID, proof of current address, custody paperwork (if applicable), birth certificate, a food stamp award letter, or proof of income and expenses. Incomplete applications are not considered. For more information, contact the TCSA at (706) 884-6842.
