Lanett boys ranked No. 10 in opening poll

Published 12:00 am Thursday, December 13, 2018

A pair of Valley area teams received nominations to be in the first Alabama Sports Writers Association basketball prep poll of the season.

The Lanett boys basketball team was ranked No. 10 for all 1A schools, while the Springwood girls basketball team received votes for all AISA teams.

The Panthers begin their season on Friday at Central-Phenix, and come into the year as the three-time defending state champions. This season’s team, however, faces the tall task of replacing last season’s starters Terrion Truitt, Emanuel Littles, Anquaevious Pollard and Trikweze Bridges. The Panthers still bring back experience within the projected starting corps of Quae Houston, Kristian Story, Dee Dobbs and Jayshon Burton.

The Springwood girls are off to a 7-4 start this season, led by junior captains McKayla Barber and Andie Martin. The Wildcats are currently on winter break, but return to action on Jan. 10 at home against Evangel.

Teams to look out for entering the rankings soon include the LaFayette and Chambers Academy boys basketball teams. The Wildcats and Bulldogs got off to undefeated starts this season.
