LaFAYETTE — Thursday night was a good one for Chambers Academy. In addition to the varsity boys basketball 66-31 win over Springwood, the Rebels also honored their JV Volleyball and football state championship teams during the night.

Sophomore Payton Allen was also recognized for passing 1,000 career points playing varsity basketball. Gameplay was stopped after Allen’s first basket of the night on Thursday.

“I had no idea,” Allen said. “I’m thankful for all of my teammates and coaches. It was a good night. Any time that you can beat your rival and get acknowledged with the football team- it was just  a great night.”

Allen became the fastest player on record in school history to score 1,000 career points. He broke the mark in last Friday night’s loss to Restoration by scoring 43 points.

“To be able to score 1,000 points, only in his sophomore year, that’s a milestone that many guys don’t reach,” Chambers boys head basketball coach, and Payton’s father, Jason Allen said. “I know he’s hungry to be a lot better and there’s a lot of things that he can still keep on doing to improve.”

Payton led the Rebels in scoring again in Thursday night’s victory by dropping 27 points. Senior Colton Hand also finished in double figures while Rodricqus Dark, Hunter Wade, Austin Sluder, Raphe Daniel and Gabe Brooks also got on the board for the Rebels. Quay Johnson perhaps had the loudest cheer from the crowd as he got a late basket in the paint to go in.

“It definitely builds confidence,” Coach Allen said. “You want to be peaking at the end. That’s our goal right now.”

With another team in the area losing on Thursday night, Chambers Academy won the regular season area title and will receive a bye in the first round of next week’s tournament.

Thomas Gibbons, Trent Craft, Jonah Kelley, Mitchum Smith, Anthony Cramer, Coleman Hull and Bryant Teel all got on the board for the Wildcats in the effort. Hull finished in double digits.

The Rebels return to the hardwood on Friday night for senior night against Eastwood. With this year being the 50th anniversary of Chambers Academy, seven of the eight members of the first Chambers Academy basketball team are scheduled to be acknowledged at the game. That team from 50 years ago’s first game? It was also against Eastwood.
