LANETT — A fire Friday afternoon in Lanett resulted in heavy smoke damage to a home near the Holy Family Catholic Church, according to Lanett Fire Chief Johnny Allen on Monday.

He said firefighters got the call to 701 N. 3rd Street in Lanett about 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon and arrived to heavy smoke coming from the house. Once firefighters engaged and entered the home, Allen said they were met by flames.

Allen said the firefighters were able to quickly douse the fire and determined the fire started in a bedroom.

As of Monday, Allen said the cause is believed to be electrical in nature. He said after the fire was put out, the firefighters spent a couple hours airing out the home with large fans.

Outside of the fact there is heavy smoke damage in one room and other smoke damage to other parts of home, Allen said the house is not a total loss and the people living  there could remain doing so safely.

He said nobody was home during the time of the fire and nobody was injured during putting it out.
