WEST POINT — The Point University softball team (7-5, 3-1) split its doubleheader on Wednesday against Reinhardt 3-2 and 6-5.

“Reinhardt is a really tough team in the conference,” Point head softball coach Jennifer Tyler said. “They always finish top-two or top-three, so that was a big splot today.”

Junior Annsley Brown and senior Shea Pendley had multiple hits in Game One of the day. Senior Ryan Simpson pitched a complete game and threw five strikeouts while giving up nine hits in the matchup.

In the second game of the day, Point trailed 5-4 heading into the final frame in the bottom of the seventh inning. The bases were loaded for Valley-native and senior Lacy Striblin, who hit the game-winning single to center field that scored two runners.

“Today was huge for our team,” Tyler said. “Knowing that they could compete with the top of the conference and also knowing that they deserve to be at the top. It was good.”

Sophomore right-fielder Heather Cook led the team by going 3-for-4 from the plate in Game Two.

Pendley, junior Angela Heimback and sophomore Kianna Adams also enjoyed multiple-hit afternoons.

On the hill, Simpson and junior Allie Beilstein allowed a combined six hits in the game.

“One through nine hit the ball during that game,” Tyler said. “Everyone in the lineup was hitting, we had two or three balls that went off the fence for doubles. One through nine hit during that game, and of course Simpson and Beilstein keeping us in it was huge.”

Moving forward, the Skyhawks want to work on doing a better job of not leaving too many runners on base and playing cleaner defense.

“Once we get our defense back to Point defense, and then add our offense into it, then we’ll see good things from this team,” Tyler said.

Point will host St. Andrews for another doubleheader at home on Friday at West Point Park Field. The first pitch will be thrown at 3 p.m. EST.
