Bowling for a good cause

An upcoming event in Valley will give people a chance to bowl for a good cause.

Valley Bowl and Hair Studio 121 will host a bowling tournament at 6:30 p.m. on March 14 to benefit Relay for Life, which raises money for the American Cancer Society.

Brothers James and Harry Caldwell, who own and manage Valley Bowl together, have had cancer scares in the past.

James has generally kept his cancer story private, but he’s decided to start sharing it to give others hope.

“I think I’ve done wrong not letting other people know I had cancer,” James said. “You need to let people know you don’t have to die when you have cancer. You can continue to fight to live, so that’s the reason why I’m out with it now more than I was before.”

James had prostate cancer and basal cell cancer on his face.

“When they told me I had cancer, it was like somebody hit me in the stomach,” James said.

Harry had squamous cell carcinoma in his head and neck 12 years ago. He had to go through chemotherapy and radiation because doctors couldn’t determine where the cancer started.

“It was a life-changing experience. The main thing I wanted to do was get on with the treatment,” Harry said. “At that time, I was young enough and strong enough that I could handle all of the radiation and chemotherapy and surgery involved it in and came out on the other side OK.”
