WEST POINT — Approximately 30 Kia team members took part in Saturday morning’s West Point Volunteer Day. Most of them picked up litter along East 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th streets while others with carpentry skills did some needed work on a house being rehabbed on Avenue K.

The big group gathered at the Virginia Cook Activity Center on MLK Drive to pick up bottled water, safety glasses and litter bags before heading out. West Point Mayor Steve Tramell was there to greet them and thanked them on behalf of the city.

REHAB WORK IN WEST POINT: Volunteers from Refuge Point Church and Kia joined together to pick up litter around West Point.

“We are very much appreciative of each one of you to take a couple hours out of your day to pick up litter and to do some work on Willie McQueen’s house. Kia is so important to West Point. We love the fact you are here. Thanks for what you do.”

Among the team members present were Stewart Countess, chief administrative officer/vice president, as well as Joy Johnston and Patrick Sands of the public relations department.

The team got together for some much-needed work on a house that’s being rehabbed on Avenue K, across from Keeney Memorial Methodist Church. From left, are J.P. Clare, Keith Anderson (manning the miter saw), Cathryn Fisk, Kaye Norrell-Parker, Bernie Vercillo, Rev. Thrower and Rich Douglas.

The house on Avenue K is being rehabbed as a joint venture between Refuge Point Church and the Chattahoochee Fuller Center Project. It should be finished by the end of the month, and Mr. McQueen should be living in it in April. Much of the needed work has already been done. Cecil Ramsey and his crew have put a new roof on the house, students from Wittenberg University in Ohio were here last week to install insulation and work on the walls. Some trim work on the outside of the house was taken care of on Saturday.

The finishing phases include putting in new windows, cabinets and appliances.
