The Poarch Band of Creek Indians hand-delivered a $184,000 donation check Wednesday to fund the funeral expenses of the 23 tornado victims killed by the March 3 tornado in Lee County.
According to Lee County Coroner Bill Harris, the money will be spent through the East Alabama Medical Center Foundation to pay for the funeral costs, and there will be no administration cost. He said 100 percent of the funds will be used for burials and creations.
“As coroner, I am beyond grateful that the Poarch Band of Creek Indians stepped up and offered this generous donation,” he said. “They reached out and asked what could they do to help, and it was suggested to help with the funeral costs. They graciously offered to cover all the costs.”
