The body of a Georgia man was found in Lanett Monday morning by a crew of employees working near a gas line in the area, according to the Lanett Police Department.

Lanett Police Department Captain Richard Casner said Derek Grant Southern Jr., 26, of Marietta, Georgia, was found in the 4100 block of 35th Street SW in Lanett at about 7:20 a.m. He is described as a white male.

Casner said Southern’s body has been sent to Montgomery for an autopsy, and the police couldn’t say if there were signs of foul play of Monday afternoon. He said it is difficult to say how long Southern’s body had been at the site due to the rain, but he said it was not an “extreme amount of time.”

Casner said the Lanett Police Department is treating the incident as a death investigation, pending the results of the autopsy.
