OPELIKA — Funeral services for Mitchell L. Underwood, 66, of Opelika, were held  Monday, April 29, 2019, at 11 a.m. CDT at Central Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Garden Hills Cemetery, Opelika. The Rev. Larry Doster officiated. Visitation took place on Sunday, April 28, 2019, from 5 to 7 p.m. CDT at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home.

Mr. Underwood died Friday, April 26, 2019, at Bethany House. He was born Dec. 15, 1952, in Valley. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He attended Southern Union State Community College and Auburn University. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and served as a deacon for over 40 years at both Airview Baptist and Central Baptist.

Mr. Underwood was preceded in death by his parents, John Lewis Underwood and Dorothy Mae Mitchell Underwood of Fairfax.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Lynda Shaver Underwood, their daughter Amy Spain (Jim), an identical twin brother Fletcher Underwood, all of Opelika; a sister-in-law, Carol Shaver Stephens, of LaFayette, nephew Phil Stephens (Lisa), nephew Brent Stephens (Kesha), niece Chloe Underwood, and several great-nieces/nephew, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made in his memory to Central Baptist Church, 1611 2nd Ave, Opelika, AL 36801.
