ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves (9-6) received some assistance from the mound to end this past weekend’s series against the New York Mets (9-6).

In Saturday’s 11-7 victory, Touki Toussaint (1-0) came to the mound to relieve Sean Newcomb after Newcomb gave up four runs in the top of the second inning. Toussaint threw seven strikeouts in six innings, giving up four hits and one unearned run.

“I told him when I took him out that I’d tell him ‘great job,’ but that’d be an understatement,” Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “That was awesome. That was so big for where we’re at now, and that was really impressive.”

Toussaint was called up to Atlanta from the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers earlier in the day after failing to make the Braves’ opening day roster.

“He just got here this morning,” Newcomb said after Saturday night’s game. “Huge is all you can say, picking up me and picking up the bullpen.”

The 22-year-old right-hander received a standing ovation from the sell out crowd at SunTrust as he exited the game in the eighth inning.

“It feels good,” Toussaint said, after cracking a big smile and sigh of relief. “I don’t know  any other words to put it, but it feels good, honestly.”

The Braves assigned Newcomb to Triple-A on Sunday morning.

In Sunday night’s 7-3 win, Atlanta followed behind Julio Teheran (2-1). Teheran threw six strikeouts in six innings while allowing six hits and one earned run.  

Braves third baseman Josh Donaldson was .667 from the plate during the wins on Saturday and Sunday. Donaldson finished the weekend with three RBIs and his first two home runs of the season.

“He’s a professional hitter,” Braves right fielder Nick Markakis said of Donaldson. “He’s been around for a while, he’s had a lot of success. Once he gets it going, and it looks like he is right now, he’s putting good swings on the ball, he’s getting his timing and he’s going to help us. He’s going to help us big, and he just needs to keep having good at-bats.”

Atlanta returns to SunTrust Park on Tuesday to begin a home series against the Arizona Diamondbacks after indulging in an off day on Monday. Before Monday night’s games, the Braves were tied with the Mets for second in the NL East, both a half game behind the Philadelphia Phillies (9-5).
