LANETT — A Lanett man was arrested on attempted murder charges Friday stemming from a Thursday afternoon shooting, according to the Lanett Police Department.

Richard Hugley, who is in his mid-40s, has been charged with attempted murder.

At about 3:45 p.m. Thursday, police responded to 1221 E. 3rd Ave., in response to a shooting. Upon arrival, they found the victim, Dustin Short, suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower torso. Short was airlifted to Columbus, Georgia, for medical treatment but has since been released, according to the news release.

Police say witness information given at the scene led to Hugley as a person of interest. On Friday, investigators were able to get an attempted murder arrest warrant and found Hugley hiding at a residence in Valley.

With help from additional agencies, Hugley was taken into custody and is being held without bond until seeing a judge.

Lanett Patrol Commander Richard Casner told the Valley Times-News Friday Short and Hugley were engaged in a verbal dispute that escalated, but the reason for the dispute was unclear as of Friday. Additionally, Casner said there was a handgun found in the residence where Hugley was arrested that officers think could be the weapon used at the scene.
