VALLEY — School is out, and it’s time to celebrate the beginning of the annual summer library celebration at Bradshaw-Chambers County Library in Valley. Weather permitting, the annual kickoff event will be taking place on the library lawn from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. EDT this morning.

“All activities are free,” said Librarian Mary Hamilton. “Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy pizza, sno-cones and popcorn. Kids can test their skills and win prizes at games on the front lawn including plinko, football toss, basketball shoot-out, ring-a-drink, wheel of chance, bowling and more.”

Hands-on activities will include painting Happy Rocks and making sand art bracelets. Kids can have fun coming down a giant slide, climbing on a City of Lanett fire truck, visit with Patches the Fire Dog and meet police officers from Valley and Lanett.

Chambers County Passports printed for the Alabama Bicentennial can also be picked up and stamped at the event.

Saturday will be an ideal time to sign up for this year’s summer reading program.

“Through a donation from Sylvia Word McCullough, the library is able to offer several great incentives for our summer readers,” Hamilton said. “They will have the opportunity to earn book bucks to spend at the library store, attend a bowling party and be invited to the annual awards night program to receive reading certificates and to receive a backpack filled with school supplies.”

Readers can also earn coupons for discounts for doughnuts at Dunkin’ Donuts, ice cream from Railroads, nachos from Momma Goldberg’s, kids meals from Coaches, Wendy’s and Chicken Stop and a Papa John’s Pizza.

“The summer library celebration is the first of more than 70 programs planned for the summer,” said Tabitha Truitt, assistant library director. “Kids will be enjoying magic shows, jugglers, puppet shows and laugh with Lew-E the Clown.”

From 6:30 to 8 p.m. EDT on Monday, June 3, the library will host Touch a Truck. It will be the first of four Family Night events on Mondays in June.

“Kids can come and touch a fire truck, ambulance, bucket truck, tractor, food truck and Big Momma’s Ice Truck and more,” Truitt said. “Big Momma’s will be giving away a free ice cream treat to all the kids attending.”

On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. in June, everyone is welcome to enjoy fun performer programs. They start on June 4, when Animal Tales presents Creatures of the Galaxy. Lew-E the Clown will be returning on June 18 with his UFO Show, with UFO standing for Unbelievably Funny Objects.

Other special performers include Todd Key’s Circus Show, A Spectacular Magic Show, Story Ship’s Aliens Alive and the Adventures of the Gingerbread Man.

In July, the library will host Art Week, STEM Week and a History Detectives’ Club.
