Mr. Leon Morgan, 66, of Lanett, was born on January 9, 1953, the second son of the late Lonnie and Ruby Greenwood Morgan. A Celebration of his Life will be held on June 1 at noon EDT. at Goodsell United Methodist Church, 1007 N. 6th Avenue in Lanett.
Leon is the brother of the late Lonnie Morgan, Jr., of Lanett. As brothers, Leon and Lonnie were like two peas in the same pod, always appreciating and enjoying each other’s company, bringing joy and amusement to all they met and loved. He is the grandson of the late George Sr. and Alma Greenwood.
Leon graduated from Lanett High School in 1970 and received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Tennessee State University in 1974. Always a servant leader, Morgan pursued a career that was both diverse and interesting. He was employed for many years by Kimberly-Clark in LaGrange while pursuing other professional aspirations that included becoming a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer, Owner and Operator of Lonnie’s Tax Service and Owner and Operator of Morgan & Sons Funeral Home. He was a member of the Alabama & National Funeral Directors Association. Morgan leaves a legacy of successful multi-tasking and business acumen.
As a child, Morgan grew up in the Waterworks community and accepted Christ at a young age. He united with the Goodsell United Methodist Church as a youth. Morgan served in many capacities that included Church Treasurer and served with the United Methodist Men.
On December 30, 1984, Leon married the love of his life, Phyllis Harris. To the end, Morgan’s day began and ended with Phyllis. To this 34 year union, they were blessed with three children to nurture and care for, two beautiful girls and a handsome son: LaShawta (Connery) Booker, Tara Channel Morgan (predeceased Leon) and Hrabosky Fears. In Morgan and Phyllis’s world, love multiplied over and over. Morgan, the rock on which this family stood, also gathered unto himself upon the death of his brother Lonnie Jr, Lonnie’s children, Jessica Morgan and Lonnie (Angela) Morgan III.
He lives to mourn him a host of relatives and friends that includes two granddaughters Mikaela Booker and Brianna Fears, one uncle, George Greenwood (North Carolina) and one aunt Gwendolyn Murphy (Detroit, Michigan), one brother-in-law — Anthony Harris, Lanett; six sister-in-laws Gwendolyn Harris Brooks, Sara Cofield and Hilda (Ronnie) Patton all of Lanett; Delores (Louis) Clemonts, Greenville, Georgia.; Ruthie (James) Jones, Cartersville, Georgia. and Sylvia (Clayton) Gibson, Columbus. A gentle, observant man, with a heart of gold, Leon was especially fond of his cousins Pamela Greenwood, Andre (Vera) Patterson, Sundre Patterson, DeWayne Murphy and Luanne Murphy. Special note is made of three friends who were like blood brothers, Clarence Scott, Thomas Peterson and Clayton Gibson. Leon was loved and will be missed by a host of extended relatives and friends.
