LaFAYETTE — Graduating senior Jae’Lin McCurdy was in the bleachers on Friday night watching a new quarterback in the gun for the LaFayette Bulldogs in a 16-16 tie against Tallassee- rising senior athlete Jordan Walker.

“It was fun being back there,” Walker said. “It was my first time playing quarterback that much in a real game. I tried to go out and make plays for my team, that’s my job. Me being the leader of the team, I have to make plays and be a playmaker. I went back there, tried to do it to the best of my abilities and create something out of nothing.”

Walker had trouble at times throughout the night connecting with receivers at the new position, but he used his athleticism to extend some plays by scrambling outside the pocket and buying himself some more time.

“I can work on a lot at quarterback right now,” Walker said. “My mechanics are way off, I have a lot of camps to go to, two over the summer for quarterback so I can get right and lead my team this far. I think I did pretty well for my first time making something out of nothing. Pressure was on me a lot tonight, and I feel like I did pretty well making something out of nothing.”

Walker has been an all-area and all-state selection in recent seasons. At LaFayette’s athletic banquet, he was named the team’s MVP for last season. The defensive back saw a lot of time in the middle of the field playing the role of safety.

LaFayette rising sophomore Vinay Singh also saw snaps at quarterback in the first three quarters on Friday night. Singh completed a handful of screen passes, and threw an interception in the spring exhibition.

“Jordan is a senior, he’s supposed to know everything that we do,” LaFayette head football coach James Lucas said. “Vinay’s first time it’s just lack of experience, but he’s just starting to learn, he’s getting better.”

Seventh-grader  A.J. Patrick was the team’s quarterback for most of the fourth quarter. Rising freshman Joshua Combs made a couple of standout plays offensively in the matchup as well.

“I have a lot of youth,” Lucas said. “A lot of talent, and now it’s just getting everything to form into place.”

Summer workouts for  LaFayette begin on June 6.

“Heading into the summer, I promise that you can see a well-improved LaFayette team,” Walker said. “We’re going to work hard this summer, we’re going to get after it and we’re going to work harder than anybody. We’re going to hold each other accountable, make sure everyone gets in that work, and come fall you’re going to see a well-improved  LaFayette team.”
