LANETT — Springwood School is giving young softball and baseball players a chance to sharpen their skills next week.

From June 17 through June 19, the Springwood School softball and baseball camps will go on from 9 a.m. EDT until noon. The softball camp is accepting all players from rising first through eighth graders, while the baseball camp is accepting all rising first through ninth graders.

“It’s a basic skills camp,” Springwood School head softball coach Galen Smith said. “We’ll work on hitting, infield, outfield play, running the bases, throwing and stretching.”

While this is Smith’s second summer running the camp, this marks the first time in a couple of years that Springwood has also offered a baseball camp.

“There’s been a lot of excitement for a Springwood baseball camp,” Wildcats head baseball coach David Strickland said. “The way I teach my kids is going to be different from the way  I relate this stuff to the younger kids. I’ll use the same terminology, but for the kids, I’ll give them a different way to learn it as far as learning how to do stuff in the infield. [Whether it’s] learning proper mechanics for the outfield, working with pitchers and catchers as well, it’s split up into the three-day camp. For our kids, it’s going to have some instruction and learning, but it’s going out and having a good time. Helping these kids remember it’s a game and it’s about having fun.”

Each camp will feature current Wildcats helping operate the events. Strickland said that the encouraged the entire varsity baseball team to. Attend, while some junior varsity players will be in attendance as well.

The softball former softball Wildcat pitcher Jordan Self, who went on to play at the collegiate level, is also expected to attend this year. After nothing able to make it last summer.

“She’s more than willing, and she’s looking forward to working with the girls who want to learn how to pitch,” Smith said. “Jordan is just a good person. She was recently on a mission trip working with kids in orphanages, and I’m looking forward to seeing her again.”

Interested camp participants can still register on-site on Monday morning before the activities get started. Softball campers are encouraged to bring their own helmets and bats if they have them, but those items can also be provided. Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day as a part of the registration fees.
