VALLEY — When darkness falls in the Greater Valley Area Thursday, the sky will be filled with explosions to celebrate the United States’ independence.

At about 9:40 p.m., depending on the weather, the fireworks will start, according to Valley Parks and Recreation Director Laurie Blount. The fireworks are shot from the industrial park in Valley, behind the community center.

Blount said the restrooms at the Sportsplex will be open and residents are welcome to bring coolers to the park without alcohol. She said the fields will be available to play on as well.

“The baseball fields will be open for kids to toss balls and frisbees,” she said in an email.

There won’t be any vendors at the Sportsplex though, according to Blount. She said the city asked a couple ice cream vendors if they were interested, but they were already booked.

Parking can also be an issue as people start to arrive between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and Blount said the park is usually filled between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 p.m. In the evening, there is a 30 percent of rain and thunderstorms before 1 a.m.

Blount said it would take a big storm to call off the event.

“Once the fireworks are set we can’t change it unless it is a major storm,” she said. “So, unless it rains really hard Thursday, they are on.”

Blount said if there is a storm, and depending on the time of it, there could just be a rain delay. Also, she said if there is cloud cover, the fireworks may start earlier in the evening.
