LANETT — The Lanett Police participated in Operation Clear Track Tuesday by handing out information regarding railroad safety.

The police department teamed up with the Amtrak Police Department and Operation Lifesaver, a nonprofit rail safety education organization, to raise awareness and reinforce state railroad grade crossing and trespassing laws. Sept. 22 through Sept. 28 is recognized as Rail Safety Week in the U.S.

Lanett police officers Andrew Hammond and Sgt. Randy Floyd were stationed at the railroad crossing at Magnolia Road for a few hours Tuesday and in the West Shawmut community later.

According to a news release from Operation Lifesaver, federal statistics show that about every three hours in the U.S., a person or vehicle is hit by a train.

More tips from Lifesaver include never driving or walking around lowered crossing grates or attempting to outrun an approaching train.

Motorists should also never stop a vehicle on tracks while waiting for traffic to move, and they should also never begin to drive on tracks unless they can get all the way across.

Lifesaver also reminds motorists that it takes a train about a mile or more to come to a complete stop and the average train is three feet wider than the track on each side. If a person notices an obstruction or a problem at a track, they can call the Emergency Notification System 24 hours a day at 1-800-232-0144.
