Point golf hosts fall tournament

WEST POINT — Point University Skyhawks’ Men’s Golf team started their season at their two-day home invitational. The Skyhawks split their team into three different teams, with a total of 9 teams competing.

The A team took first place with a team score of 541 (272, 269), the B team took second place with a score of 554 (279, 275), and the C team finished eighth place with a score of 608 (303, 305).

There was a total of 47 golfers competing in this two-day tournament on 71 par course. The Skyhawks broke some records during this two-day tournament. Previously, the Skyhawks had a record of -8 on par, and today they took it to -15 on par and for two-days it totaled -27 on par.

Coming in 1st place, Ryan Van der Klis, with a score of 132 (68, 64). In 2nd place, Eric Wower, scored a 135 (69, 66).  Raun Pretorius and Blake Watson tied at 3rd place with a 136 (66,70)/ (68, 68). Matias Baccola scored a 138 (69, 69) to come into 5th place. With a score of 139 (70, 69), it tied Chase Thompson at 6th place.

A three-way tie at 9th place belongs to Lucas Evertsson (71, 70), Tanner Lee (71, 70), Drew McCullers (73, 68) with a score of 141. Trevor Poole tied at 17th place and scored a 147 (70, 77). Tied in 24th place, Tiago Swart, scored a 149 (69, 80). Scoring a 150 (76, 74), Michael Botha, came in tied at 26th place.

Hayden Johnson scored a 154 (79, 75) to tie at 35th place. Another tie at 39th place, Will Tiller scored a 156 (78, 78). Shaun Richards scored a 157 (81, 76) to tie at 41st place. At 43rd place, Garret Smith scored a 159 (79, 80). Alex Parker finished the scoring for the Skyhawks at 47th place with a score of 165 (89, 76) .

“First off, I want to thank all the people who came out and supported us this weekend. It means a lot to these kids to see so many people interested in how they are playing,” Point  head golf coach Steven Paine said. “Secondly, we played really well this weekend. The guys played hard, against some good competition. We set a couple of school records this weekend and this was a great way to start off our season.”

For the  women, Blakely Arp finished as the runner up for this invitational with a score of 150 (80, 70). Tied at 7th place, Abby Taylor finished with a score of 155 (78, 77). With a score of 182 (88, 94), Alley Warnke came in 27th place

Coming in at 30th place, Sydney Lindsey, scored a 199 (97, 102). Sariah Bastings finished up the scoring for the Skyhawks in 33rd place with a score of 209 (109, 100).

“What a wonderful tournament and we are grateful to the schools who traveled to play in our inaugural event,” Point womens head golf coach Angela Ormsby said. “Congrats to the winners and especially to Point’s Blakely Arp for her runner up finish and Abby Taylor’s first top 10! They have put in hard work over the summer and it’s paying off.”

The Lady Skyhawks compete in the two-day SCAD Atlanta Fall Invitational in Covington, Georgia at the Oaks Golf Course. The men travel to Valdosta, Georgia for the two-day Thomas University Fall Invitational at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Course starting on Sept. 23.
