WEST POINT — The West Point Police Department’s National Night Out on Tuesday is a chance for local citizens to meet with law enforcement.
“It’s a community-building event,” said West Point Police Chief Donald Britt. “It gives us a chance to talk to the people we serve.”
The West Point Fire Department, Troup County Health Department and Point University will also be on hand.
“We’ll be there to support our law enforcement,” said WPFD Chief Mitt Smith.
Families are invited to bring their kids and dogs to John Hoggs Park, the location of the event.
The kids will have the chance to see a police car and a fire truck and have time to enjoy the park.
“Residents from different neighborhoods meet up and discuss what’s important to them,” said Lt. Roman Ramseur of WPPD. “They make West Point as a whole better,”
Local neighborhoods represented at National Night Out will include Water Works, Roper Heights, Forest Park and Booker Hills. Past National Night Out events have been a place for collaboration.
After a recent National Night Out, a group from Roper Heights determined it wanted to start a neighborhood watch.
“If we weren’t having National Night Out events, the community would have no chance to see us outside our regular duties,” Ramseur said. “Instead, we all get to put our heads together and come up with ideas.”
The main focus of the event is to allow residents to meet law enforcement officers.
“Instead of calling and just hearing a voice, now you have a face,” Ramseur said.
National Night Out is Tuesday, Oct. 1 at John Hogg’s Park, located at 1205 US 29 in West Point, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the splash pad and ball field area.
