Last week, schools in the Troup County School System honored veterans and educated students on the significance of Veterans Day in the community and in schools.

On Wednesday, Troup High Air Force JROTC (AFJROTC) instructor Major David Frick told a group of third, fourth and fifth grade students at Franklin Forest Elementary that members of his AFJROTC attended and participated in six ceremonies by mid-week. The ceremonies were all to honor the men and women who served our country. 

While at Franklin Forest, the Troup High AFJROTC members held a posting of flags ceremony, P.O.W. ceremony, talked to the students about the rifle that the color guard uses during ceremonies, and shared why they joined AFJROTC. One cadet stated the rifle is not a real weapon, so it is inoperable. She also stressed that the members of the armed forces are there for the protection of people in the United States.

In addition, Berta Weathersbee Elementary held a ceremony where a former serviceman was the guest speaker. The Berta Steppers honored the veterans in attendance with a routine and the Troup High Chorus, along with young singers from Berta, provided a choral rendition. Long Cane Elementary honored veterans through a video tribute while Hogansville Elementary continued the tradition of a parade and reception where students and staff walked through the hallways with flags and photos of their loved ones that served.

The Callaway High and Troup High AFJROTC participated in various programs throughout Troup County and the Troup High Chorus hosted a concert honoring veterans. Members of the AFJROTC stated that it’s an honor to educate people in the community on how young people can be of service in our local area.
