West Point man involved in fatal wreck

AUBURN — A West Point man was involved in a fatal traffic accident Saturday afternoon but survived.
At about 3:14 p.m. on Saturday, Auburn Police and Fire Division units responded to a traffic crash on Interstate 85 near mile marker 53. According to a news release from the Auburn Police Department, a 2015 Toyota Corolla struck a 2019 Buick Envision in the rear while traveling in the northbound lane.
Ruth E. Oliver, 89, of Shiloh, Georgia, suffered fatal injuries during the crash and was later pronounced dead at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
The driver of the Buick was a 77-year-old male from West Point, who was treated on the scene and released. The driver of the Toyota was a 58-year-old female, also from Shiloh, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries but was flown by helicopter to Piedmont Columbus Regional Medical Center.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Auburn Police Department as of Tuesday.
