There will be a new place for veterans and their families to turn to in Chambers County. Veterans in that area no longer must drive very far to learn about their benefits or to meet with a Veterans Service Officer, as the Chambers County Veterans Service Office is scheduled to begin operations on Feb. 25.

According to a press release from the State of Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs, the office’s operating hours will start as Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Once a full-time veterans service officer is hired and trained, the office will be open five days a week, according to the press release.

The new office, located on the second floor of the Chambers County Courthouse Lanett Annex, 610 South Gilmer Avenue, Lanett, will advocate for vets and their families.

“Many vets don’t know about the benefits they have earned by just being in the military. We are basically the liaison between the veteran and the VA,” said District Manager Rogers Wilson. “The VSO will make sure they receive the support, benefits and recognition they earned as service members.”

The office is a walk in and be served on a first come, first serve basis. All services are free. Contact the office at (334) 755-5729.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. at the Lanett Annex.
